Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to my deeper dive into today’s Connections answers. The idea behind this is to help clear things up for anyone who isn’t sure how today’s groups fit together.
If I’ve missed any red herrings or misunderstood something, let me know via email or on Discord. I don’t typically look at X or check the comments here.
I’m going to assume that you’ve already beaten today’s game. We’re going straight into spoiler territory here. So, consider this your one and only warning.
Here are today’s NYT Connections answers explained (and any red herrings I spot) for Friday, August 28:
Today’s NYT Connections Answers Explained
Connections – Yellow Group
🟨 bedtime parting words (NIGHT, REST EASY, SLEEP TIGHT, SWEET DREAMS)
Simple enough. The category title has us handled here. These are just things you’d say to someone before they go to sleep.
Connections – Green Group
🟩 palindromes (MOM, NOON, SIS, TOP SPOT)
I’m annoyed I didn’t clock this group. Since it was a phrase, it didn’t catch that TOP SPOT was a palindrome until it was too late.
Connections – Blue Group
🟦 modern add-ons/combining forms (BRO, CODED, ERA, MAXXING)
Okay, okay, let’s do this. These are basically modern slang terms.
BRO is a very casual form of address or interjection. It can also be used to call someone a “tech bro” (for instance), to indicate they’re a male who works in the tech sector or is really interested in technology.
CODED is used to liken something to a different thing. To call something Pixar-coded indicates that it shares some likenesses with a Pixar movie.
To say something like “I’m in my ____ ERA,” would mean that you are really interested or engaged in a particular topic. If you were in your Eras Tour era a couple of years ago, maybe you went to a Taylor Swift show or two.
MAXXING means to optimize a particular area or quality of one’s life. You can looksmax all you want. Nothing wrong with that per se. Just please don’t do anything harmful to yourself, like this guy did.
Connections – Purple Group
🟪 top of the ____ (HOUR, LINE, MORNING, POPS)
Top of the HOUR means the beginning of an hour – noon, 1 P.M., 2 P.M. and so on. I think it stems from an analog watch or clock and the minute hand pointing directly upwards at the start of an hour.
Top of the LINE means the highest-end version of something. It could be the most premium version of a car with all of the add-ons or a PlayStation 5 Pro (vs. a standard PS5) or an iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Top of the MORNING basically means “good morning.”
Top of the POPS refers to the most popular song at a given time. It was also the name of a long-running music chart T.V. show in the U.K.
Connections – Red Herrings
We’ve got at least a couple potential traps in the mix today. POPS, MOM, BRO and SIS are all informal terms for a family member (father, mother, brother and sister, respectively).
MORNING, NOON, NIGHT and ERA are all times or periods of time.
