Today’s NYT ‘Connections’ Hints And Answers For Sunday, August 4 (#420)

Looking for Saturday’s Connections hints and answers? You can find them here:

Hey there, folks! I hope you’re having a fantastic weekend.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

In Connections, you’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like horror movie franchises, a type of verb or rappers.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the hardest one to deduce. The purple group often involves wordplay, so bear that in mind.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers.

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

Today’s 16 words are…

  • SPORT
  • DRINK
  • BLUE
  • OOZE
  • DOWN
  • LLAMA
  • TIGER
  • GAME
  • DEEP
  • CHAMP
  • BRINY
  • EERIE
  • AMENABLE
  • AARDVARK
  • BUDDY
  • WILLING

And the hints for today’s groups are:

  • Yellow group — nicknames for a youngster
  • Green group — raring to go
  • Blue group — it’s twice as nice when you start out well
  • Purple group — alternate names for something we’ve only explored about 20 percent of

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Today’s groups are…

  • Yellow group — kiddo
  • Green group — up for it
  • Blue group — beginning with double letters
  • Purple group — nicknames for the sea, with “the”

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • Yellow group — kiddo (BUDDY, CHAMP, SPORT, TIGER)
  • Green group — up for it (AMENABLE, DOWN, GAME, WILLING)
  • Blue group — beginning with double letters (AARDVARK, EERIE, LLAMA, OOZE)
  • Purple group — nicknames for the sea, with “the” (BLUE, BRINY, DEEP, DRINK)

It took me I think five days since my last one but it was nice to have a perfect game again. My overall streak now sits at 14 wins.

I found it to be a relatively straightforward game today. The blues jumped out at me right away, then seeing BUDDY and SPORT together gave me the yellows. BRINY was then my entry point into the purple group. That left the greens (which I did figure out) for the win.

I have to admit, I was expecting some marijuana references today, since this is the 420th Connections puzzle, but I’m not mad about it. (I don’t partake, for what it’s worth, but each to their own.)

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog for hints and the solution for Monday’s game if you need them.

P.S. Green Day, the band that headlined the festival I was at on Saturday, are pretty important to me. They’re one of the few bands that I, my sister and parents all enjoy. We even saw Green Day live together one time. That was a fun day and also the last time I saw the band, some (gulp) 19 years ago.

It’s hard to pick a favorite song by them but I’ll go with one that brings back some memories. I won a high school talent show by singing and playing this one on guitar. This was a little before the age of smartphones, so I don’t think there’s any footage (sorry/not sorry). I haven’t actually listened to this song much in the many years since then, but it’s still a great track.
