Tokenization Is Transforming The Rails Beneath Financial Markets

Charlie Gautreaux is CTO of IRALOGIX, an AI-Native & API first wealth and retirement infrastructure company.

Tokenization is often discussed as though the breakthrough is turning a traditional financial asset into a token. But that framing misses what may be the more consequential change now underway.

The token did not simply become the share. What changed is that moving the token can become the legal act, and the register it moves on can now sit on a public or private blockchain. The token is an instruction. A named party still keeps the record.

We are already seeing that shift move beyond experimentation. In July 2026, BNY launched Digital Transfer Agency capabilities supporting digitally native funds and providing legal representation of fund books and records on a public blockchain. BNY’s transfer-agency business services approximately $8.6 trillion in assets across more than 7.6 million investor accounts.

A retirement account is the record before it is anything else. What a recordkeeper does all day is maintain a ledger and reconcile it against everybody else’s ledger. If the financial industry is about to relearn what an authoritative record is, retirement is one of the parts of the market with the most ledgers and the least automation. Those with modern platforms may therefore be well positioned to adopt what comes next.

The scale makes that more than a back-office concern. U.S. retirement assets totaled $47.6 trillion as of March 31, 2026, representing 34% of all U.S. household financial assets. Defined contribution plans alone held $13.8 trillion, including $9.9 trillion in 401(k) plans.

Why The Transfer Agent Layer Matters

It makes sense that this shift is beginning at the transfer agent layer. The transfer agent represents perhaps the thinnest layer in the financial stack that still carries the authoritative record without requiring a major recordkeeping overhaul to change. That combination does not really exist elsewhere in the infrastructure. It helps explain why tokenization has moved here before fundamentally changing the custody or depository layers.

Still, I would hesitate to call what we are seeing today the inflection point. I would call it the first credible step toward where that inflection has to happen.

What would make the change more definitive? One signal would be an existing fund converting its register on-chain rather than launching a new native fund or share class. Another would be a second global systemically important bank going native rather than relying on a tracking mirror. Regulatory treatment will matter, too, particularly whether an on-chain register is recognized as the official record rather than simply a permitted replica.

This Is A Reallocation Story

It is also important not to assume that putting more financial records on-chain means intermediaries simply disappear. I would push back on that framing. This is not primarily a disintermediation story. It is a reallocation story.

That view is consistent with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), which has argued that tokenization does not eliminate intermediaries so much as change their role. In a tokenized environment, BIS describes the operator as a trusted intermediary focused on governance and serving as the curator of the rulebook rather than the bookkeeper recording individual transactions.

Reducing reconciliation and recording work does not eliminate trusted operators. It changes where their value lies. Less effort may go toward manually proving that two records agree, while more responsibility moves toward governing the rules under which the authoritative record operates.

Retirement demonstrates why that distinction is relevant.

Retirement Is More Than An Ownership Ledger

A retirement recordkeeper’s ledger is not simply a statement of who owns what. It is also a tax-and-plan-rules record. It incorporates source accounting, vesting, loans, hardships, required minimum distributions, pre-tax versus ROTH basis, 402(f) notices and much more. A token can carry a balance or an instruction. It cannot by itself carry ERISA and plan-qualification state and all of the additional context required to administer a retirement plan.

That means on-chain fund shares can change upstream reconciliation without immediately changing the core retirement product.

This creates an interesting paradox. Retirement may be among the least exposed areas in the near term because of the complexity of the record it maintains, while becoming one of the most exposed over the longer term as the recordkeeping infrastructure beneath it changes.

When the underlying recordkeeping layer changes media, retirement is downstream of that change by nature.

One Authoritative Record Changes The Economics

We should be careful about overstating the financial benefits. There is not yet a credible independent number quantifying the value. But there are things we can say without relying on one.

One authoritative record instead of two permanently removes a class of reconciliation break. The gap between economic and legal transfer can compress from a settlement cycle to seconds. Collateral can become mobile across venues in ways it structurally could not before.

There is already evidence of what that can look like operationally. In DTCC’s Great Collateral Experiment, assets moved on-chain, transaction rules were enforced automatically and settlement timelines that typically stretched across hours compressed to seconds.

That may ultimately be one of tokenization’s most important benefits. The opportunity is not merely to perform an existing reconciliation process faster. In some cases, it is to remove the structural reason that reconciliation was necessary in the first place.

The Platform Sets What Product Can Promise

Payments made this trip already. Card authorization went real-time decades ago, but settlement stayed batch until RTP and FedNow closed the gap between an instruction and its finality. What that unlocked was less speed than products nobody could promise before, because you cannot design an experience the platform cannot confirm.

Retirement still runs on next business day or longer. NAV strikes once. Contributions post overnight. Pending, in transit, as of, processing: that vocabulary exists to cover the distance between what is true and what the system can prove today.

That gap is about to matter more. We are attaching agents to these systems, and an agent reasoning over last night’s state is confidently wrong rather than merely slow. It cannot close a loop that ends in “we will email you.” AI-native interaction is not a front end on batch. It needs a record that is current and final at the moment it is read.

That is the design question I would put first. Much of what we have built exists to manage the gap, and I am not sure how much of it survives the gap closing.
