UFC 313 Storylines: Can Pereira Defeat a Master Grappler
We know Alex Pereira is arguably the greatest striker in MMA history. He’s rode that skill to becoming a two-division champion in the UFC.
What we don’t know is if he can be as dominant or even victorious against an opponent like Ankalaev who is capable of blanketing and pounding his foes in grappling and ground-and-pound situations.
Ankalaev is the favorite heading into the main event. UFC President Dana White says that if Pereira can pass this test, he may be the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. He’ll definitely have a strong case.
UFC 313 Storylines: Will Gaethje Be Compromised After the Brutal KO at UFC 300
The KO loss Gaethje suffered at the hands of Max Holloway in April 2024 at UFC 300 was unlike anything I’d ever seen in MMA. It was Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim—only it happened in a fight between two truly elite fighters.
The KO loss was one of those life-changing defeats that could have altered Gaethje. Quite honestly, there is a good chance that even he is unsure of the full impact it had on him.
Gaethje faces late replacement Rafael Fiziev in a rematch of their 2022 meeting. Fiziev is on a two-fight losing streak despite his injury-fueled layoff. However, he cannot afford to lose, and neither can Gaethje.
UFC 313 Storylines: Is Mauricio Ruffy Ready for the Next Level?
Ruffy is one of the most exciting up-and-coming fighters in the sport, and he’s getting a main card spot against a respected veteran like King Green. While Green isn’t a title contender at 38 years old, he is skilled and properly represents a tier of UFC fighters who can test the mettle of any fighter who feels like they’re ready to ascend into a special stratosphere.
Green is coming off an embarrassing submission loss to Paddy Pimblett in his last fight. He’ll want to get back in the win column, and Ruffy is looking to continue his ascension.
