Vehicle Recalls Are Skyrocketing—Here’s Which Models And Issues Are Most Frequent

The auto industry is in the process of setting a new record for recalls, with over 23 million issued over the first six months of 2026. That’s twice the number registered during the same period last year and is fast approaching the more than 29 million vehicles recalled in all of 2025.

Ford is leading all automakers in this regard, with 55 campaigns affecting more than 12 million vehicles during the first half of 2026. That amounts to 52% of all light-duty-vehicle recalls issued, according to quarterly reports issued by the dealership support company BizzyCar.

It should be mentioned that virtually every automaker has issued at least one recall thus far in 2026, including exotic-car brands Aston Martin, Bentley and Lamborghini.

Recalls are issued when vehicle owners, regulators, or manufacturers determine that a potentially faulty component presents an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet specified standards. Sources indicate their sheer numbers are mounting due to increased vehicle complexity, faster development timelines, stricter regulations and heightened regulatory scrutiny.

Though they tend to attract negative coverage, recalls can be looked upon as a good thing, with federal administrators and car builders assuring the motoring public’s safety. At that, however, it can be a genuine hassle to make an appointment and bring a car or truck back to the dealership for an inspection and repair.

To that end, it’s no surprise the title search company Carfax reports that as of early 2025 one out of every five vehicles on the road continued to be driven with one or more open recalls, posing a potential risk to drivers, passengers and even pedestrians.

Helping to avoid the necessity of an actual service department visit is the growing number of models that can accept digital over-the-air updates (OTAs) to solve certain issues virtually. According to BizzyCar, over the past four years nearly 15% of recalled vehicles have been eligible for OTA software updates, with Ford leading all comers with nearly 5.5 million such recalls over the first half of 2026.

Recall Reasons

The most common grounds for recalls issued during the second quarter of 2026, according to BizzyCar’s data, include those for defects to electrical systems accounting for 45.4% of all campaigns, followed by rear emergency braking systems (20.4%). Over the first quarter, industry-leading recalls affected powertrain issues (20.6%), structural defects (14.26%) and airbags (11.38%).

Yet not all recalls are to address major mechanical problems. Sometimes vehicles are called back for fixes as minor as changing a few pages in a vehicle’s owner’s manual that were either missing or contained erroneous information. Earlier this year Honda issued a recall for tire-sealant containers that might be over-pressured and inadvertently pop the cap with risk of injury.

The biggest recalls issued during the first half of 2026 include:

  • 4,381,878 Ford F-150 pickup trucks for possible trailer lighting and brake failure.
  • 1,739,260 Ford vehicles under two separate recalls for backup camera issues.
  • 1,392,935 F-150’s for a transmission signal loss that can cause unexpected transmission downshifts.
  • 1,076,999 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models for power steering wiring that may overheat and ignite.
  • 1,049,883 Honda CR-V and Accord Hybrids, and CR-V Fuel Cell EVs for the aforementioned tire sealant containers.
  • 880,514 Honda and Acura MDX SUVs for potential rear suspension failure.
  • 741,195 Ford SUVs that could inadvertently shift into park while the vehicle is moving.
  • 604,533 Ford SUVs for possibly defective windshield wipers.
  • 568,576 Hyundai Palisade SUVs for potential improper airbag deployment.
  • 550,007 Toyota Highlander and Grand Highlander models for second-row seatbacks that may not remain locked.

The most critical types of recalls involve “Do Not Drive” and “Park Outside” notices. In a Do Not Drive recall, owners are advised not to operate the affected vehicle to avoid a potential accident and/or injury. A Park Outside missive is more serious and involves a fire risk, even while a vehicle is parked and unattended; here, owners are advised to move the vehicles outside of garages and away from buildings.

The biggest Park Outside campaigns in the first half of the year were issued for 1,076,999 Chrysler vehicles for power-steering system fire risk and another 17,277 for battery fire risk, 69,153 Subarus for fuel cap leakage and 11,895 Mercedes-Benz units for a risk of high-voltage battery fire.

Recall Notices And Repairs

Whenever a safety-related recall is issued the automaker is required to contact every owner of record for that particular model by mail, though some can be issued via email or mobile app alerts. However, it can be difficult or downright impossible for a manufacturer to contact second or third owners, which helps explain why older models typically have the highest percentages of uncorrected recalls.

Fortunately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains a free searchable online database at nhtsa.gov that allows consumers to determine if cars they currently own – as well as those they’re considering buying in the resale market – are at risk because of unrepaired recalls. Owners can uncover issued recalls by entering either a license plate number or a model’s vehicle identification number (VIN), with the latter noted on the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle, or on the driver’s-side door jamb.

Motorists can also register their vehicles with NHTSA and be contacted automatically if a safety issue is discovered via the downloadable SaferCar app for Apple and Android smartphones. The app also enables motorists to submit complaints to NHTSA regarding possible safety problems with their vehicles. For its part, Carfax also maintains an online recall database, and can also notify users of its Car Care smartphone app of any unresolved recalls.

Those driving a car that’s been recalled should contact a local dealership immediately to set up a service appointment. Owners shouldn’t be charged for repairs, though it may take some time to secure a service appointment to have a specified fix taken care of at a local dealership if a large number of vehicles are affected.
