Why Visual Clarity Is Now A Competitive Advantage For Work And Play

George Toh, Vice President & GM – Visual Business, Lenovo Intelligent Devices Group.

This summer, competition played out on screens around the world. From the FIFA World Cup 2026 to the Esports World Cup, audiences watched athletes and gamers perform in environments where the ability to see, process and respond to information quickly can make a meaningful difference.

While the settings are very different, they point to a broader truth about how we interact with technology: visual performance is not only about how good something looks. It is about how effectively a display helps us understand what is happening, decide what to do next and stay engaged.

That matters in gaming, where responsiveness has long been a priority. It also matters at work, where people are moving between data, video calls, AI tools, creative applications and other information-heavy tasks throughout the day.

As the boundaries between work and entertainment continue to blur, the monitor is becoming more than an endpoint for content and central to the personal tech ecosystem.

Visual Clarity As A Competitive Advantage

Competitive gaming provides one of the clearest examples of the relationship between visual technology and human performance.

In a fast-moving game, players are constantly processing visual information, tracking movement and making decisions in fractions of a second. Refresh rate, motion clarity and system latency can all influence how quickly what happens in the game is translated into information a player can see and respond to.

Research is beginning to provide a deeper look at how sensitive people can be to these differences. In a study examining visual feedback latency during a sensorimotor learning task, researchers found that reducing latency from 85 milliseconds to 25 milliseconds increased implicit sensorimotor learning by 50%.

While the study did not examine gaming specifically, its findings reinforce a broader principle that gamers have understood intuitively for years: even relatively small differences in visual feedback can influence how people interact with digital environments.

This principle extends beyond competitive gaming. Engineers reviewing a complex model, creators working with detailed visual assets and knowledge workers navigating multiple streams of information all benefit when technology makes information easier to see and act on.

What I’ve seen is that performance is not just about the numbers on a spec sheet. The real value comes from making information easier to see, understand and act on in the moments that matter.

Moving Seamlessly From Work To Play

The line between a work setup and a gaming setup is also becoming less defined.

Many people use the same desk, computer and monitor throughout the day, moving from spreadsheets and video calls to streaming, creative projects or gaming after work. This puts new expectations on displays. A monitor designed for modern users’ needs to perform across different experiences rather than optimize for only one.

Gaming may offer an early look at some of the skills that will become increasingly important in digital workplaces. Pew Research Center found that 56% of U.S. teens who play video games say gaming has helped their problem-solving skills. Many of today’s younger users are already accustomed to navigating complex interfaces, processing information from multiple sources and responding to rapidly changing digital environments.

This is where adaptive display experiences can play an important role. Rather than relying on a single fixed configuration, monitors can increasingly adjust elements such as brightness, color and visual performance based on content being viewed, the surrounding environment or the needs of the user.

I believe the best display experiences are the ones that adapt naturally to how people use them. As users move between work, gaming and other content, the technology should help make those transitions feel seamless and intuitive.

That reflects a larger shift across computing. The best technology is becoming less about how much users can customize or manage and more about how effectively it can reduce friction for them.

Designing For Focus And Endurance

Responsiveness is only one part of performance. The other is how well an experience holds up over time.

For knowledge workers, maintaining focus is becoming increasingly difficult. Microsoft research found that its most highly interrupted workers can face hundreds of meetings, emails and chat notifications throughout the day. Add multiple applications and windows competing for attention, and the visual workspace itself can easily become another source of cognitive load.

Gamers face a different version of the same challenge. A competitive match can require intense concentration over an extended period of time, and I’ve seen how important it is for the display experience to support that level of focus. The same applies at work, where comfort, clarity and sustained attention can be just as important to performance.

This makes sustained viewing an increasingly important part of monitor design.

Features such as adaptive brightness, low blue light technology and ergonomic adjustability can help create a more comfortable experience while preserving the visual quality users expect. Larger and higher-resolution displays can also give users more space to organize information, helping reduce unnecessary switching between windows and applications.

These features may not attract the same attention as headline performance specifications, but they address an increasingly important question: How can technology help people perform at their best without becoming another thing they need to manage?

Designing Displays Around People

Competitive gaming is an especially useful testing ground for visual technology because its demands are so immediate. When information changes quickly and every response matters, the relationship between the person and the display becomes impossible to ignore.

As screens become the primary way we interact with AI, data, entertainment and one another, displays will play an increasingly important role in determining how intuitive those experiences feel. The future of displays will be shaped by how well they respond to the way people actually use technology.

The best display experiences start with understanding how people actually use technology. By paying attention to those needs, we can design displays that fit naturally into people’s lives, whether they are working, gaming or moving between the two. Ultimately, the goal is to create technology that makes those everyday experiences simpler and more seamless.
