Brand New Day’ Post-Credits Scene? An Explanation

It is standard practice to sit around and wait for a post-credits scene after almost any superhero movie, especially Marvel ones, where I cannot remember the last time the MCU didn’t have one. That was naturally the case in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where at the very end of the credits (not midway through), we got one.

Spoilers follow, but if you clicked on this article, you probably know that already.

The post-credits scene features no actors, but rather Ned’s Spidey-tracking app. It pans past Earth and the moon into space, showing a Spidey icon in the middle of the blackness. It appears that, despite the fact that we’re getting a more “grounded” Spider-Man now, he is going to be back doing something more cosmic, as we saw in the Infinity War/Endgame era. But what?

There are two main possibilities here, and both have to do with Avengers movies, Doomsday and/or Secret Wars.

This being linked to Doomsday seems somewhat less likely. Holland has not been listed as appearing in the film, though it is possible that he could appear in a cameo. That movie, however, outside of an initial appearance of the Fantastic Four in their spaceship, has to do with the multiverse, and there’s no indication it takes place in space in any meaningful capacity. So why would there be a Spider-cameo there?

Rather, the best explanation is that Spider-Man will show up in Secret Wars, a film that does not have an announced cast yet, but all indications are that it will re-add a bunch of Marvel heroes that do not appear in Doomsday for the other half of the story.

We believe we know for sure that Sadie Sink will return in Secret Wars, which was reported before this. We know now that she is Jean Grey, and Secret Wars is a heavily X-Men-based story that is likely to introduce a new crop of kids (given Sink’s age, we know they are, in fact, going to be young). Sink’s appearance in Brand New Day, despite having no basis in the comics, has directly linked her to Peter Parker as her one “friend” in the MCU, so if she’s in that film, it stands to reason that he may be too. It is also very obvious now that Spider-Man is the biggest hero in the MCU, and it seems very unlikely that we would get through two full Avengers movies without him appearing in either of them.

As for the space connection, much of Secret Wars takes place on “Battleworld,” stitched-together worlds that would occupy some point in space, likely a catalyst to collapsing the multiverse into one place in the MCU. That could be what the icon is. I’ve heard some people saying that there’s no way Ned’s Spidey app could track him there but I mean, come on, suspend belief a bit. Do you think it could track him on the moon? (I’m still not sure how he’s tracking him at all, outside of reported sightings). At the very least, wherever Battleworld is, it’s not Earth.

Holland has said in interviews that he has no idea what Secret Wars is about, and he was likely not told because he tends to spill secrets on press tours. That by itself would imply that he’s in the film, depending on how you want to interpret that. As for what Secret Wars is about, Spider-Man is in fact in the story, and this is actually the origin of the “black costume” for the hero, the introduction of the symbiote concept. So yes, that seems pretty important for his character. It is pretty much impossible to believe Peter won’t show up there, and that’s what this scene is implying.
