Gervonta Davis Vs. Lamont Roach – Last Fight Results
This will be Davis’ first fight since he stopped Frank Martin in June 2024. Roach also last fought in June 2024, scoring an eighth-round TKO win over Feargal McCrory.
Gervonta Davis Vs. Lamont Roach – Date and Location Changes
Davis and Roach have been on a collision course for nearly six months. At one point, Davis was seemingly set to challenge IBF lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko in a unification fight.
Lomachenko has decided to take extended time off since he defeated George Kambosos Jr. in May 2024, and some question whether he’ll ever return to the ring. Roach was slid into the spot after campaigning for a fight against Davis for months.
The Davis-Roach clash was originally supposed to happen on December 14, with the original location set to be Houston. However, things changed and the location was switched to Brooklyn.
Gervonta Davis Vs. Lamont Roach History and Betting Odds
The two men fought each other twice in the amateurs: once in the regionals and once in the nationals. Tank won both of those fights by decision.
I spoke with Roach when the fight was originally agreed to, and he is well aware that very few people are giving him a chance to defeat Tank. How big of a favorite is the champion?
Davis is a minus-2000 favorite over the challenger, who is a plus-750 underdog. For the uninitiated, that means you’d have to bet $2,000 on Tank to win $100, and you’d win $750 for every $100 bet on Roach.
I asked Roach why he decided to take the risk and move up to challenge Tank.
“Because I know I’m the best. I’m not a small 130-pounder, for all the people that don’t know. And Tank is not a big guy. I’m probably bigger than him in stature, height, and body mass-wise. It’s not really a big difference at 135 pounds. It’ll be five pounds less to lose. All that factored in.”
There’s also the obvious monetary reward for fighting a star of Davis’ level. In the lower weight classes, there is no question, Davis is the biggest draw and thus presents his opponents with the best opportunity to earn significant purses.
Combine that with the potential respect and shine that would come from becoming the first man to defeat Tank, and it is easy to see how a fighter would get motivated to take on such a tough task.
As we move closer to the fight, be on the lookout for continued coverage from Davis-Roach fight week. I’ll be in Brooklyn for the fight and providing post-event coverage.
