Why Do Dogs Get ‘The Zoomies’ Right After A Bath? A Biologist Explains

That post-bath sprint has an official name among veterinarians and behaviorists: a Frenetic Random Activity Period, or FRAP. Cornell’s veterinary college notes that these bursts show up around many triggers — after waking, during play, when an owner comes home — but bathing is one of the most consistent. The puzzle isn’t that dogs get excited sometimes; it’s why this specific, mildly unpleasant experience so often ends in a full-body release more affectionately as zoomies.

Zoomies Might Be A Displacemenr Behavior

The leading explanation borrows a concept from the earliest days of ethology, the formal study of animal behavior, founded in the mid-20th century by Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen. Tinbergen formalized the idea in a 1952 study published in the Quarterly Review of Biology, describing what’s called displacement behavior: when an animal is in a state of built-up arousal — from conflict, restraint or an experience it can’t fully process in the moment — and no immediate outlet exists, that energy gets rerouted into a burst of vigorous, seemingly unrelated activity.

Britannica’s entry on displacement activity describes it as an animal performing an act that doesn’t match the situation that provoked it — the nervous-system equivalent of a pressure valve popping open.

A bath fits the setup precisely. Even a dog that isn’t afraid of water is dealing with restraint, unfamiliar handling, slippery footing and a barrage of smells and sounds it can’t control. None of that is necessarily traumatic, but it is sustained arousal with nowhere to go, because the dog is, quite literally, held in place.

The same underlying mechanism was documented in a 2022 study published in Scientific Reports, which found that dogs facing frustrating or restrictive situations reliably show displacement behaviors, though it’s still debated whether these behaviors release built-up arousal or simply reveal it. The moment the towel comes off and the leash of the situation lifts, that accumulated charge has an outlet again, and running is the fastest, cheapest way for a dog’s body to discharge it.

Zoomies Help Dogs Get Their Scent Back

There’s a second, complementary idea worth naming, because it explains a detail displacement behavior alone doesn’t: why so many dogs don’t just run after a bath, but roll, rub against furniture and dive face-first into carpet or grass.

Scent is central to how dogs experience the world and, many researchers argue, to how they experience themselves. A 2017 study published in Behavioural Processes by canine cognition researcher Alexandra Horowitz found that dogs respond differently to their own scent than to an altered version of it, suggesting odor functions something like a mirror for a species that leads with its nose, though other researchers have argued this reflects simple odor discrimination rather than true self-recognition.

Dogs’ sense of smell is estimated, per a 2018 review published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, at 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a human’s, so stripping that signature away with shampoo isn’t a small cosmetic change from the dog’s vantage point — it’s closer to having your own smell replaced with someone else’s.

That’s the basis for a behaviorist hypothesis that some post-bath zoomies double as scent-restoration: rolling and rubbing lay the dog’s own odor back down over unfamiliar soap and perfume, while the sprinting works through the leftover arousal. The two ideas aren’t competing explanations so much as two mechanisms likely firing at once — one physiological, one instinctual — and biologists don’t yet have a clean way to say which one is doing more of the work in any given dog.

Not All Zoomies Are The Same

The clearest evidence is in the dog’s body language during the episode. A loose, bouncy zoomie — ears back, tongue out, tail wagging or neutral — reads as celebration or relief. A tense one, with the tail clamped tight against the body and the eyes wide, is closer to a fear response working itself out, and is a signal worth taking seriously rather than laughing at.

What the zoomies really illustrate is something bigger than bath time: a lot of behavior that looks goofy or inexplicable on the surface turns out to be a fairly literal readout of an animal’s internal state.
